London Dinner - 26 February 2010
You are warmly invited to our annual London Dinner which is to be held in Mayfair, London W1. This year the Dinner is more than just a reunion, which is why we have chosen the ballroom at The Lansdowne Club as our venue, to give Edmundians of all generations the opportunity to come together and celebrate John Vaughan Shaw's forty-five year teaching career at St Edmund's. Advanced Studies Awards
We congratulate Alexander Gunia (07-09), Nemanja Saric (07-09) and Zi (Andy) Ye (07-09) on being selected to receive Edmundian Association Advanced Studies Awards because of the results of their A-level examinations. Each Award, which this year is the form of a cheque for £333, was announced on St Edmund's Sunday.

Requiescant in pace
With regret we must record the recent deaths of the following Edmundians: Margaret Greenhill (Assistant Infirmary Sister 1976-93) (pictured right) died on 7 December 2009 at the age of 95. At the time of her death she was the third oldest known living Edmundian. Click here for more information about her work at the College. Marcus Shevlin (Junior House & Stapleton 1981-88) died on 1 December 2009 at the age of 40. May they rest in peace.

St Edmund's Sunday 2009
Our annual celebration of St Edmund's Sunday was held at the College on 15 November 2009. After High Mass at 10.30am, there a drinks reception in the Ambulacrum followed by an excellent buffet lunch in the Refectory. In the afternoon there were rugby and hockey matches outdoors, whilst inside visitors could go on a tour of the College, see old films, visit the Museum or just socialise with old friends. The day concluded with Vespers and Veneration of the Relic.

Requiescat in paceWith great regret we must advise that Adam Taylor (Stapleton & Talbot 1993-2000) was tragically killed in a road accident on Sunday 18 October 2009 at the age of 27. May he rest in peace.

RIP
With regret we must advise that Patrick Delaney (Challoner 1978-81) died on 9 October 2009 at the age of 44 after a fight with cancer. We have also recently learned of the deaths of Juan Primo de Rivera (Junior House 1980-82) on 1 December 2008 at the age of 39, and of Mgr Philip Webb (Allen Hall 1937-43) on 14 October 2009 at the age of 92. May they rest in peace.

30 Years Ago
The long-running BBC television programme Question Time celebrated its 30th anniversary recently. The original broadcast featured Archbishop Derek Worlock (Douglass & Allen Hall 1934-44) on the panel. The very first question asked on the show, which was broadcast on 25 September 1979, was about the visit of the Holy Father to Ireland. Click here to see the entire programme on BBC iPlayer.

Requiescat in paceWith regret we must advise that Christopher Nolan (Douglass 1964-71) died on 22 July 2009 at the age of 56 after a short battle with cancer. He was the brother of Geoffrey Nolan (Douglass 1971-78). May he rest in peace. Details of a memorial service to be held in Buntingford will be given at a later date.

Retirement of Janet Neal

Nearly 300 students, Old Edmundians, staff, former staff, parents and friends attended a special garden party in the grounds of the College on Sunday 28 June 2009 to say goodbye to Mrs Janet Neal. She retires after 20 years at the College, 15 of them as Deputy Headmistress. We have appointed Janet as a Patron of The Edmundian Association, and we wish her a long and happy retirement.

Retirement of Nigel Howard

After his final Sunday Mass as organist on 28 June 2009, Mr Nigel Howard was awarded Honorary Membership of The Edmundian Association in recognition of his 40 years' service to the College. Please click here for more details.

Mr Nigel Howard (music teacher, former Director of Music, former Assistant Housemaster of Talbot & College organist) retires this summer after 40 years' service to the College. Mrs Janet Neal (languages teacher, former Housemistress of Douglass, Deputy Headmistress, Registrar & parent) retires after 20 years' service. Mr John Vaughan-Shaw (classics teacher, former Head of Classics, former Housemaster of Douglass & parent) retires after 45 years' service. We thank them all for their contributions to the College and wish them long and happy retirements. Ad multos annos!

Requiescant in paceWith regret we must advise that Felix Britt-Compton (Douglass 1927-33) (pictured right) died on 16 June 2009 at the age of 94. Felix was the brother of Canon Denis Britt-Compton, Headmaster between 1949 and 1968, and the father of Christopher (1959-68) and the late Peter (1961-71).
We must also record the death of Paul Knight (St Hugh's & Challoner 1946-55) on 27 June 2009 at the age of 69. He was the brother of Christopher (1951-61) and the late James (1946-55).

Fr Garvey's Pilgrimages to Lourdes
Between the mid-1970s and early 1980s, the Headmaster Fr Michael Garvey led pilgrimages travelling by "jumbulance" to Lourdes. Click here to see some photographs from that time. We are grateful to Sister Ann Purcell for donating them to the College archives.

Nostalgia This photograph is believed to have been taken in June 1961 and shows a cut-down Daimler owned by the St Edmund's College Motor & Engineering Club (SECMEC), which was run by Fr Peter Bourne.
